Though Seeming Desolate on the Surface, the Prairie is Full of Life

The Story of the American Bison, is arguably one of the saddest conservation stories in the United States. This animal once roamed from the Rockies to the Appalachians numbering almost 60 million before European Settlers Arrived. In the late 1800’s this number hovered near 1,000 individuals. Luckily, conservation organizations such as The Nature Conservancy have been hard at work to return the landscape and these animals to their native lands. Their numbers hover around 30,000 in conservation herds today, mostly in small herds across the US and Canada.
